What does Coercive control look like?

The term 'coercive control' has been used a lot in public discussion and the media recently. What does it mean and how do you know if it's happening to you or someone you care about?

Signs of coercive control:

"He kept insisting that I share my password on my Facebook account."

Navigating what we share with our partners in relationships can often be tricky. In respectful relationships, it is not only normal but healthy to have our personal space and privacy and decide what we are comfortable sharing and what we are not comfortable sharing. Some potential signs of coercive controlling behaviours:

  • Your partner is often jealous and uses jealousy to justify their actions and behaviours;
  • You feel like you have no personal space or privacy;
  • You are made to feel guilty when you spend time with your family, friends or on your personal interests

If you find yourself in these situations or if you suspect that you might be in a relationship with a coercively controlling partner, remember that you are not alone and you can get the help and support you need. You can call 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732).
